10. CoreSite Reston VA3  – Northern Virginia, US | 940,000 Square Feet

There are three facilities in CoreSite’s Reston data center, which are known as VA1,VA2,and VA3. These facilities are located in Northern Virginia. CoreSite VA3 is the largest one, featuring 940,000 square feet. 

It provides access to most cloud, network, and managed service providers. Furthermore, the CoreSite Reston features high-efficiency UPS systems, variable speed fans for optical cooling, and self-contained rooftop AC units with an integrated de-humidification system.

9. Tulip Data Center – Bangalore, India | 970,000 Square Feet

For years, the Tulip data center was the largest non-US based data center in the world. Tulip Data Center Services is India’s leading enterprise data services provider. It’s a multi-tiered facility built to tier 3 and tier 4 standards.

Construction on the facility began in 2011. It was designed in large part by IBM engineers, with input from a variety of different industry experts. Their services are designed to minimize complexity, streamline operations, and simplify vendor management. They focus on performance, reliability, availability, and end-user satisfaction.

8. QTS Atlanta Metro – Atlanta, United States | 990,000 square feet

Built in 1954, the building was originally used as a distribution center for the Sears Southeast region. In 2000, the building was bought and went through a huge repurposing project to develop into the data center that we see today. It took six years and $80 million to remodel the building. 

The QTS Atlanta Metro facility has its own on-site Georgia Power substation and direct fiber access to various alternative carriers. They provide colocation services, custom data centers, and cloud services. The building also features an automated management system that controls the critical power system, and an automated control system that monitors air temperature, humidity, and water pressure.

7. Utah Data Center – Utah, United States | 1,000,000 Square Feet

The official name of the Utah Data Center is called the Intelligence Community Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative Data Center. The facility was completed back in 2014 with the total costs topping $1.5 billion thanks to a variety of setbacks, power surges, and other issues. 

This data center is built to support the Intelligence Community’s efforts to monitor, protect, and strengthen the nation’s security. For security reasons, the exact capacity is classified but it’s designed to expand more in the future.

6. Lakeside Technology Center – Chicago, United States | 1,100,000 Square Feet

In 2005, Digital Realty Trust bought the Lakeside Technology Center building for $140 million. This building was updated and renovated from its original use as a printing press for Sears Catalogs and Yellow Book phone books. It’s now used by multiple companies including Facebook, CenturyLink, IBM, and others. 

Lakeside Technology Center is  designed to house various types of data centers for financial firms. They operate more than 280 data center facilities, which totals 35 million rentable square feet across the world. This location has some of the most redundant systems, with around 53 backup power generators to minimize the risk of any type of outage.

5. Apple Mesa Data Center – Arizona, United States | 1,300,000 Square Feet

The Mesa Data Center was originally developed by  Tempe-based First Solar Inc. However, Apple revealed that they would spend $2 billion to improve the facility over the next decade. Due to security purposes, the details of what goes on within the data center are not told. 

Apple calls this facility its global data command center, employing 150 people working in 10-hour shifts to oversee its operations data. Operations can range from applications such as iMessage, Siri and iCloud. To power the datacenter with green energy, Apple constructed a 300-acre solar power plant in Florence, Arizona. The power plant has a 50 MW capacity, which can power about 12,500 homes. 

4. CWL1 Data Center  – Newport, Wales | 1,450,000 Square Feet

As the largest data center in Europe, CWL1 has several offices and workspaces that are customizable based on the customer’s requirements. Throughout the campus, there are various meeting spaces and conference rooms. CWL1 is also among the most efficient data centers in the UK. Featuring low power usage effectiveness (PUE), it has a direct 400 kV SuperGrid connection, highly resilient generators, and UPS systems.

3. The Citadel Campus – Nevada, United States | 7,750,015 Square Feet

The Citadel Campus is located near the Tesla Gigafactory and is built and owned by Switch, a Las Vegas-based company that develops and operates large data center facilities. They are powered exclusively by renewable energy, which makes it one of the greenest data centers in the world. It has earned all A grades in the Greenpeace Scorecard, demonstrating its role in energy transparency, renewable energy commitment, and siting policy. They use future-proof concepts that are imitated with virtually all new data center designs. 

Designed to exceed Tier IV standards, this facility features a fiber network that delivers nine-millisecond latency to San Diego and Los Angeles, along with a seven-millisecond connection to TAHOE RENO 1 data center in The Citadel Campus. 

2. China Mobile – Hohhot, China | 7,750,015 Square Feet

The 2nd largest data center is China Mobile, which is one of the world’s biggest cloud computing data centers. Located in the Inner Mongolia Information Park, China Mobile has a service capacity of over 40,000 racks in a building of 720,000 square meters. The company has 59 data center locations within 50 miles of the facility. By having the data centers close to the facility, they will be able to provide better services that meet the growing demand of the international telecommunications market. 

Even more so, the facility serves as a centralized operation support system. They provide enterprise services, concentrated network management, and R&D for new technologies such as cloud computing and 5G.

1. China Telecom Data Center – Hohhot, China | 10,763,910 Square Feet

Last but not least, what is the largest data center in the world? Taking over a large area of over 10 million square feet, the largest data center is the China Telecom Data Center – Inner Mongolia Information Park. They have an extensive global network of over 400 data centers. These high-performing global networks are located in regions of Mainland China and overseas markets

The networks are utilized for international carriers, overseas customers, and multinational enterprises. They have also secured over 50% market share within the Chinese data center market. China Telecom data centers are designed for telecommunication, cloud computing, and financial firms. Their cloud computing services are used by tech companies, enterprises, and institutions. To reduce energy consumption, they have also established green data center policies.
