42U Server Rack Strategies for Energy Efficiency
With the widespread adoption of high-density applications and the rising costs of energy, data centers are being forced to take additional considerations when deploying server racks and developing efficiency strategies. Here are four 42u server rack cabinet placement strategies to consider.
Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle Server Rack Layout
This is probably the most popular design for data centers. This blueprint focuses on keeping the inlet cold air from mixing with the exhaust hot air through the use of hot and cold aisles, a raised floor, and air conditioners that push cold air up through the raised floor, into the cold aisles. For the Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle layout, perforated cabinet doors are preferred, and rack accessories must not obstruct airflow.
Cold Aisle Containment
Cold Aisle Containment follows the same principles of the previous layout, but offers a further level of separation by enclosing the cold aisle. This enclosure enables the data center to set the temperature higher in the room in order to keep the return exhaust air warm. This strategy has become more popular as the focus shifts to energy efficiency.
Hot Aisle Containment
Hot Aisle containment, while fundamentally opposite, follows the same guiding principle, but instead of enclosing the cold aisle, the hot aisle is contained. As opposed to the previous strategies, this strategy relies on distance for efficiency, as the hot and cold air has less distance to travel than in previous plans.
Close-coupled cooling is a great option for anyone with limited space. As opposed to setting up the room for regulated airflow, this option eliminates those considerations, as no new hot or cold air is introduced into the closed cabinets. In this option, the air conditioner is connected to the cold air portion of the cabinet, which means that like the hot aisle containment model, the efficiency of this strategy stems mainly from distance.
With the new emphasis on energy efficiency, whether it be for cost-saving or for the environment, more care and consideration must be taken in planning and developing a data center. By taking into account these strategies, you can find the perfect strategy to build or renovate your own efficient data center.
