How To Identify a Dell PowerEdge Server Model

Dell PowerEdge servers with common design components are grouped into generations. The server naming of models can provide insight to the generation, class of system, form factor or CPU socket count. To help you identify your Dell server model, you will need to understand the naming conventions first. You can also refer to Dell Support for more information on identifying your server’s model number.

Dell PowerEdge Server Naming Convention

Since the 10th generation of PowerEdge servers, the naming for Dell server models generally consists of a letter(s) followed by three or four numbers. The letter indicates the (type) form factor of the PowerEdge server.

CC Series; Modular and compute optimized server nodes and servers for hyper-scale environments
FFlexible - Hybrid rack-based sleds for rack-based FX2/FX2s enclosure
M or MX*Modular - Blade servers and other items for the modular enclosure MX7000, M1000e and/or VRTX
RRack-mountable servers
TTower Servers
XEPurpose-built for complex, emerging workloads that require high performance and large storage
XRIndustrial-grade servers for extreme environments

Three Numbers Naming Convention

The first number after the letter indicates the class of the system.

  • 1 to 3 – 1 CPU system
  • 4 to 7 – 2 CPU systems
  • 8 – can be 2 or 4 CPUs
  • 9 – 4 CPUs

Next, the second number indicates the generation, with 0 for 10th generation, 1 for 11th generation and so on.

  • 0 – 10th generation
  • 1 – 11th generation
  • 2 – 12th generation
  • 3 – 13th generation
  • 4 – 14th generation
  • 5 – 15th generation

Lastly, the third number indicates the make of the CPU.

  • 0 – Intel
  • 5 – AMD

For example, if you have the Dell R740 server, then this model is a Rack 2 CPU system from the 14th generation of servers with Intel Processors.

Four Numbers Naming Convention

In the four numbers naming convention, the first number after the letter indicates the class of the system.

  • 1 – 5 defaulting to iDRAC Basic
  • 6 – 9 defaulting to iDRAC Express

Next, the second number indicates the generation, with 0 for 10th generation, 1 for 11th generation and so on.

  • 0 – 10th generation
  • 1 – 11th generation
  • 2 – 12th generation
  • 3 – 13th generation
  • 4 – 14th generation
  • 5 – 15th generation

Then, the third number often indicates the number of CPU sockets.

  • 1 – 1 CPU
  • 2 – 2 CPUs

And finally, the fourth number indicates the make of the CPU.

  • 0 – Intel
  • 5 –  AMD

For example, if you have the R6415 server, then this model is a Rack 1 CPU socket system from the 14th generation of servers with AMD processors.

Dell Server Compatibility List

Next, you will need to locate the “Solutions by Brand” tab and select “Dell” on our website. This will direct you to our product page for Dell products. You can locate the Dell category on the left, which has a Dell Server Compatibility filter for multiple server models. You will be able to search for the model number and determine if any of our products will work with your device.

Another way to search for your device’s compatibility with our product is to check the product page itself. In the “Additional Information” tab, we included the model number that is compatible with the product you are viewing.

For example, the 1U Cobra 160-A Rail for Dell is compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R710.

RackSolutions Universal Fixed Server Rack Rails

As another alternative option to OEM rails, Universal Rack Rails are designed to fit in any type of server. These fixed rack rails are typically designed more simply in an effort to overcome the majority of rack mounting’s common inconsistencies. Depending on your server model, you can get them in sizes from 1U-3U. They are also equipped to install in racks with square, round or threaded holes. Additionally, their mounting depth is more flexible, accommodating both deep and shallow racks.
